Honors Discussion Questions for Socratic Seminar:
Choose 6 to fill in your organizer. Answer and support with evidence from text or personal experiences. Should literary dishonesty be a crime? Would you read the book even though you know it is a lie? Why? Why did Oprah try to get in the way of James Frey and his success? At what point is a memoir no longer a memoir due to embellishment? How would you deal with Frey's situations if you were him? Should Frey be punished? What should his punishment be? What is the limit of truth? Can something be truthful but not factual? Is it ever okay for a writer to bend the facts? What would the story be like without the manipulation? If the story was told "truthfully" would it be as well-received? If you were a fan who found out this book was made up, how would you feel? Why? Why do you think he embellished his stories? Are all memories/memoirs fabrications? Does the truth matter? To whom and why? Do you think it was right of him to lie? Why/why not? Do you think he deserved the consequences? |
